Our Story

Nestled in the heart of the city, ALAJUELA CITY Hotel & Guest House is a true oasis.  We are located just 8 minutes from the SJO- San Jose/Juan Santamaria International Airport.

The original tropical Victorian home, which is now known as ALAJUELA CITY Hotel & Guest House, was the private family residence belonging to the Llobet family and was built at the turn of the 20th century.

During the Costa Rican Civil War in  the 1948,  the home was used as a hospital for injured Costa Rican soldiers.  The Red Cross set up operations in the many rooms of the Victorian home.  The Llobert family was proud to be able to support the efforts of the war.  In addition, the home served as a kindergarten and was run by the sister of the Llobet family.

In 1998 the journey to convert this historic home into a charming boutique hotel began. With the hotel’s proximity to the Poas Volcano and the over 200 volcanic formations in Costa Rica, the family decided to honor Costa Rica as a land of Volcanoes, and the original name the of  Hotel Los Volcanes.

The hotel is now entering its second decade of operation.  The original family who grew the hotel’s reputation decided to move onto other ventures and in 2018 sold the hotel.  Under new management has come a new name, “ALAJUELA CITY Hotel & Guest House “ new visions and ideas but continue with the same attitude of service and hospitality.  Updated rooms in clean crisp white with pops of bright colors bring a Costa Rican flair.

At the heart ALAJUELA CITY Hotel & Guest House is a commitment to providing a quality experience to all of our guests in the Alajuela and Central Valley of Costa Rica. With the availability of the national park, area zip line and coffee tours the Alajuela area is a destination for travelers and sightseers from all over.   The goal of ALAJUELA CITY Hotel & Guest House and the Staff is to open the doors of Costa Rica by providing the warmth, hospitality and our experience and become the gateway to discover all Costa Rica has to offer.
